2007 - 2008 RIC RACING SEMINAR SERIES
"Let us show you our winning ways"
In the winter of 1982, Rick Hiland and Don Denomme conducted their first seminars designed to teach the basics of proper race car preparation and chassis alignment and setup techniques. What began as a few hours of instruction intended to help the most novice of drivers and crew has grown into an in-depth 2 day weekend Seminar Series on various individual topics devoted entirely to obtaining the maximum performance from any race car.
Since these early days, the Seminars have instructed and helped several thousand students from a wide range of racing classes & organizations, including oval track as well as road course, with a number of students returning for refresher courses as their skills improve or the complication of their race cars increases as well as to attend some of our newly added seminar topics.
RACE LUCK = GOOD PREPARATION + OPPORTUNITY
MURPHY's Racing Law: whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.
You can beat MURPHY decisively in the shop with good preparation.......and then you can beat your competitor fair and square on the race track.....let us show you how.

RACE CAR SEMINAR SERIES OVERVIEW
One of the most frustrating areas of racing for both beginners and veterans
alike, is trying to keep the race car running and handling at its best.
Understanding the dynamics of a race car chassis, and the changes that can
improve lap times, is often viewed as a " black art ".
All Seminars are conducted in the shops
of RIC RACING & MOTORSPORTS ENGINEERING. We utilize power point
presentations and hands-on demonstrations in all our seminars in a shop
atmosphere. Each Seminar
teaches the basic practical skills necessary to prepare and setup a winning race
car. You will gain the knowledge and confidence needed to understand problem
areas and make effective changes to make you race car or performance car fast
and safe. We advocate full utilization of the rules/rulebooks for your
racing class or racing organization and safety and related equipment
& practices in all our seminars.
Established 27 years ago, this successful program is personally instructed by
both Rick Hiland and Don Denomme. Rick is the owner of RIC RACING and has more
than 39 years of experience in the race engineering, fabrication, preparation and
setup of winning club and pro race cars, while Don has nearly 28 years of racing
experience and held the position of Chief Driving Instructor for New England
Region / SCCA for 12 years.
ALL SEMINARS are hands on and are limited to approximately 15 (minimum 8
required to hold seminars) students and are
designed to provide individual attention with a hands-on experience. These are
not classes in theoretical engineering, but are based on a solid basic
foundation of information necessary to properly prepare, maintain and safely
operate any production, formula, sports racing car or high performance vehicle.

RACE
CAR PREPARATION
It is
essential that a race car be properly assembled, prepared and functioning freely
before any race car or high performance setup can be effective. Topics include:
Preparation, Maintenance, Hardware and fasteners, Rod ends and spherical joints,
Crack testing, Driver fit, basic Fabrication tips, tools, parts & supply
sources, and tips on all systems of a race car.
CHASSIS ALIGNMENT / SET-UP SEMINAR
To
insure maximum performance and have a clear understanding of the impact of
planned changes, base line settings must be established. This
class covers topics critical to getting the most out of a race car chassis.
We demonstrate Squaring a Chassis, Effects of Changes in Caster, Camber
and Toe, Suspension Motion Ratios, Spring/Wheel Rates, Setting Corner
Weights, Bumpsteer and more. In addition to using various shop
instruments, we review simpler "home made" instruments that you can
use to produce the same results. Seminar is hands on in shop experience.
UNDERSTANDING
SHOCK ABSORBERS
SEMINAR
This seminar covers topics such as the Basic Function of Shocks,
Understanding Single vs. Double vs. Triple Adjustable Shocks, Shim Stacks
and Shock Valving, Reading Shock Dyno Sheets and graphs, Theory of
Chassis Tuning with Shocks. Class also features work on the shop's own
computerized shock dyno and hands on dis-assembly & assembly of shocks.
HIGH
This
High Performance Street Set-up Seminar is for the high performance enthusiast
who would like to understand some of the basics of performance in order to get a
little more out of their performance vehicle for that track day, Solo II, or
autocross. Topics covered will include tires, springs, shock absorbers, anti
roll bars, roll cage installations, tire pressures, alignment settings,
performance products, etc.
FABRICATION SEMINAR
The
Basic Fabrication Seminar is for that do it yourselfer who would like to get a
better insight into some basic fabrication in order to handle some of those
simple repairs that turn into nightmares, but shouldn’t. It will help you to
understand which projects that you could undertake and which ones to leave for a
professional shop. Topics to include: sheet metal forming, the different types
of welding/brazing, riveting, joining type fasteners,
SPONSORSHIP
RETENTION
Sponsorship
retention deals with the care and feeding of sponsors. Now that I have finally
got a sponsor, what are my responsibilities? What
next? Why to racers loose sponsors? We
will help you to understand what a sponsor expects to get out of sponsoring your
racing effort. What does the sponsor expect in addition to their name on the
race car or trailer? You will go away from this seminar with a whole new outlook
on sponsorship and the responsibilities that go along with keeping them on
board.
CREW
ORGANIZATION – PRACTICE / TESTING SEMINAR
The
Crew Organization – Practice / Testing Seminar is geared to the team or crew
of a racing effort. It emphasizes organizational & leadership skills and
planning for a successful racing season. What is the difference between practice
and testing? Should the crew/team plan for a practice or a testing day at the
race track? Should check lists be utilized? What should be on the check lists?
Valuable information for road racing and ovals.
DATA
ACQUISITION SEMINAR
The Data Acquisition Seminar is geared to help the driver and crew to better understand what this valuable tool can do for you, both on and off the race track. From the least expensive units to the most expensive units, what will fit into my budget and provide valuable race car tuning for the crew/team and driver improvement on the race track. A whole new perspective on race car and driver tuning with the ability to measure the performance.
